The team of contractors that we have appointed to carry out the restoration work to Queensmere will be arriving on site on Monday 2 December. They will be based in the back bay of the Windmill Car Park so please be aware that for the next six weeks or so the car park will have less space than usual.
The first day will involve the site set-up where contractors will set up their compound and erect safety signs around the working area. They will access Queensmere via the woodland slope from the car park.
Working hours will be between 07.30 and 18.00hrs and there will be no weekend work.
ACCESS TO QUEENSMERE AND SURROUNDING AREA WILL BE RESTRICTED FOR SAFETY REASONS.

12/11/2024 - HOLLY CLEARANCE WORK BEGINNING ALONG JERRY’S HILL
During November and December a small team of foresters will be on site to start the next phase of the holly clearance work. This year the work will take place alongside Jerry’s Hill on Putney Heath.

Why are we carrying out this work?
Reducing the coverage of Holly in some areas of the Commons’ woodland is of great benefit to the overall biodiversity of the site. The low levels of light that accompany the presence of this dominant and hardy tree greatly restrict the development of a well-structured woodland environment. Our aim is to ensure that it is not the dominant species so that a natural process of woodland regeneration can be allowed to take place.
Whilst Holly is a native species and is important in providing nesting opportunities for birds as well as nectar and pollen for bees and other pollinating insects, we retain 10% of the existing Holly in each Collapse

In April 2023, Wimbledon and Putney Commons Conservators were awarded funding to carry out surveys of Queensmere, and to also develop landscape designs that would aim to improve the pond for both wildlife and visitors.
These surveys were carried out in 2023 and sadly identified that despite being located within the green and natural landscape of the Commons, this man-made pond with its concrete banks provided little in the way of ecological value and was in an impoverished and poor condition.
One of the problems identified was the number of trees that dominate the vegetative coverage around the pond, negatively impacting the water quality and overall ecology of the pond, and the report recommended that maintenance works to the trees located around the perimeter of the pond be considered a high priority in the overall restoration project.

16/09/2024 - At the end of August this year, our longest-serving member of staff, Bill Rowland, retired after 41 years of service.
Originally a Mounted Keeper, then Senior Keeper, and latterly Head Ranger at Putney Lower Common, Bill Rowland is a familiar face to so many of you!
Bill joined the Commons in 1983. His background in the Household Cavalry, and then in the fire service, made him the perfect candidate for the role of Mounted Keeper, and he was offered the job straight away.
Once Bill had completed his three months probation, he and his wife Debbie were offered accommodation on the Commons – and to their surprise, this would be in the Windmill, which was still living accommodation on the ground floor in those days, with the museum up above.
Bill commented “We couldn’t believe it, it was such a unique place to live. We moved in on the Thursday, with no furniture other than a double mattress, and had a party on the Saturday night. We lit the Collapse
