Meet actor, screenwriter, producer and award winning director John Deery
Award-winning film director & Wimbledon Newsie community partner John Deery shares his passion for coaching and is showing support for the next generation of influencers by hosting a series of transformative online workshops.
John who hails from Merseyside is the co-creator of the No.1 children TV series ‘Underground Ernie’ and director of the award winning feature film Conspiracy of Silence’. Aside from his artistic talents he has a remarkable gift for coaching public speakers and anyone who needs to ‘find their voice’.
He began his career as an actor working in theatre and television and started in the film industry as a runner on commercials working with many top directors. He attended the National Film & Television School. Early in his career he produced and directed numerous high profile corporate films, this experience lead to the development of a One-Day Course Learning and Developing Skills for Public Speaking for employees in some of the UK’s leading companies.
John’s first feature film, ‘Conspiracy of Silence’, which he wrote and directed, stars Academy Award-winner Brenda Fricker, Hugh Bonneville and Chris O'Dowd. It was developed at the Sundance Screenwriters' Lab and is a well-reviewed film, winning the National Board of Review's Freedom of Expression Award. He won the prestigious Hartley-Merrill International Screenwriting Award and was nominated for Best Film Director at the Irish Film and Television Awards.
For British television he has directed two 90-min ‘specials’ of the popular comedy-drama series, ‘Fat Friends’, starring Alison Steadman, Ruth Jones and James Corden; a feature length episode of ‘The Brief’, starring Alan Davies; and a 2-hour prime-time television film for the ITV network, ‘If I Had You’, starring Sarah Parish – which received excellent notices and achieved impressive viewing figures.
Alongside his film and television drama career, John was the co-creator and producer of the No.1 children’s animation series, ‘Underground Ernie’, for BBC – based around a fictional underground railway service called 'International Station’ which is run by station supervisor, Ernie, played by Gary Linekar. It aired on BBC Cbeebies and BBC Two in the UK between June 2006 and December 2009 and achieved some of the highest viewing figures for the channel.
Directing and working with actors, as well as John’s own acting and presenting experience, make him the ideal person to coach and help prepare people to get up in front of an audience to give a speech or make a presentation. John’s experience and skill will benefit individuals who need to up their game and is most suitable for vloggers, entrepreneurs, sales professionals, managers, job seekers and anyone who needs to communicate more effectively in order to successfully influence either in person or online.
Since COVID-19, John has been running a 2-hour online webinar on weekday mornings from 10am - 12 noon to give people the basic skills they need to get over the fear of speaking online or in public. This 2-hour webinar explains the "do's" and "don'ts" of how to conduct effective presentations, both online and in person, when the world finally gets back to normal, whatever “normal” turns out to be. It will also help you to communicate and come across better in job interviews.
